Spotted at the Harrisburg car show.

Why are there tail lights under the trunk lid? Why is the trunk opening so TINY?

I mean, it’s a buick, so I’m certain old people fit into the explanation somehow, but I just can’t figure out how.

My guess, the rear has to raise for the tip to go up, so while the normal lights are otherwise out of the way these lights serve the functions.

Laws in the US require taillights to be visible when the trunk is open.

Edit - not just the US, the original Opel has them as well.

Kinda pointless to have the taillights attached to the trunk lid then. Should’ve just made them fixed and had a smaller but less complex trunk opening.

It’s a rebadged Opel, and in parts of Euroland, your taillights must be visible when the trunk is open, so it has two sets.

We actually checked that, and as far as we could tell the trunk lid doesn’t have to move for the top to go up or down. It’s got a separate plate for that.

So essential lights (brake lights, side lights and indicators) are viewable when the boot is open. The car has always been a summer cruiser and opening isn’t much smaller than a VW Eos.

I guess all the cars I’d seen had at least part of their tail lights that weren’t on the trunk lid, so I’d never even thought it might be required. huh.

I was under the impression the US had this law as well.

Now imagine trying to explain to a guy at an auto parts store how you need a set of brake lights for the inside tail lights, not the outside ones.
